Welcome to Blossoms Day Nursery
Toothbrushing Programme
Here at Blossoms, we understand the importance and advantages brushing teeth at a young age can have. Research has shown that children who start tooth brushing when they are very young are less likely to develop tooth decay.
Once your child turns two years-old, you will have the option for them to join our toothbrushing programme. Your child will be given their own toothbrush and toothpaste. Their toothbrush will be stored safely in one of our toothbrushing racks
Children under two would require 1:1 supervision during brushing and this is not possible within the nursery setting. It is advised by oral health professionals that children under two do not take part in supervised toothbrushing programmes. The children need to brush their own teeth and while some children under 2 may want to brush for themselves, they will not have sufficient dexterity and control to do this. For this reason, it is not effective practice for them to take part in the toothbrushing programme. However, we must stress the importance of parents brushing their child’s teeth twice a day at home. Children under two are still actively supported in promoting oral health in many ways during their time at Blossoms, such as the use of Doidy cups, promoting our ‘Use of Dummies in Nursery’ policy, we provide a healthy balanced diet during their time at nursery and all children receive a ‘Blossoms Oral Health Pack’. The children also take part in many age-appropriate activities to promote oral health and building understanding around toothbrushing.
KEY POINTS
This programme should not replace your child’s tooth brushing routine at home. Your child should:
- Brush their teeth before bedtime and once during the day, as well as the supervised tooth brushing programme
- Spit out after brushing and do not rinse
- Be supervised when cleaning their teeth until the age of seven
- Have regular dental check-ups.
